Chula Vista business license
Chula Vista license deadlines and charges
- The City charges a business license tax of $25 a year with five or fewer employees, or $52.50 plus $6.50 per employee with more (2026).
- The City issues every license through December 31 and adds a 10 percent penalty to late tax, then 10 percent more each month, up to 60 percent.
- The City charges a business licensed between October 1 and December 31 for that quarter and the whole next year.
An Eastlake dog groomer with two employees who applies in October 2026 pays $31.25 at 2026 rates: $6.25 for the fourth quarter and $25 for 2027. The City of Chula Vista Finance Department, at 276 Fourth Avenue, Building A, collects the tax before it issues a license.
Who needs a Chula Vista business license
Anyone transacting, engaging in or carrying on business within Chula Vista needs a license, including a Tijuana-based consultant meeting clients in Otay Ranch. Owners working from a residence also need a Home Occupation Permit, $25 in the City's August 2022 fee bulletin. An in-city mobile business without a commercial address can use a home address and follows the Home Occupation Permit rules.
Applicants file the online application with:
- A FEIN for a corporation or LLC, or the last four digits of each owner's Social Security number for a sole proprietor or partnership
- A state license number for a licensed professional
- A storm water certification for a mobile business that uses water
The Finance Department emails the balance due within 10 business days of accepting the application.
