Escondido business license
Escondido license tax on gross receipts
- The City taxes a fixed-location business on annual gross receipts, from a $35 minimum up to $125 plus $0.15 per $1,000 above $200,000 (2026).
- The City issues each license to one owner at one address and charges $20 plus a new review for a move.
- The City adds a 25 percent penalty for each month an owner renews late, up to 100 percent (2026).
The City of Escondido taxes a business on the gross receipts it reports on federal Schedule C. A Grand Avenue barber with $60,000 in receipts pays $57.50 a year.
The City licenses anyone doing business inside the city, including businesses based elsewhere, and no business may operate until the City approves the license.

- Contractors with no Escondido office pay $150 for general building or engineering work or $50 for specialty work in their first year (section 16-63).
- On an on-time renewal, those contractors move to the gross receipts scale.
- A business based outside the city reports only the receipts it earns in Escondido.

Extra permits for regulated businesses
Ambulance services, auctioneers, massage establishments, pawnbrokers, taxi operators and tobacco retailers need a separate City permit on top of the business license. Since July 1, 2021, the City has charged tobacco retailers $88 a year for a tobacco retail license, after a police assessment.
When to hire a CPA for receipts in several cities
A contractor working in Escondido, San Marcos and Carlsbad reports receipts to each city under its own rules. A CPA can keep one ledger behind the three licenses. To find one, see how to choose a CPA.
